Clean Air Zones Scotland

map of Glasgow

In certain locations in Scotland, levels of harmful nitrogen dioxide are being recorded at levels which do not meet statutory expectations - predominantly caused by road transport.

Low Emission Zones can help reduce pollution from vehicle emissions, tackling both poor air quality and climate change. As such, LEZs were introduced across Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen on 31 May 2022.

Local grace periods now apply until enforcement begins.

  • Aberdeen (2 year grace period on penalty charging, penalties will start 1st June 2024)
  • Glasgow (The LEZ now applies to all vehicles, however enforcement for zone residents will start on 1 June 2024)
  • Dundee (2-year grace period is set out, with enforcement beginning for all vehicles on 30 May 2024)
  • Edinburgh (2 year grace period on penalty charging, penalties will start 1st June 2024)

An additional grace period may also be available to those who live within Glasgow's Low Emission Zone - with further details to be confirmed once the design of Glasgow's LEZ is finalised.
